Antarctic Cruise Passengers Hunger Strike Over Cancellations
2024-11-29The SH Diana is currently traveling towards its next port of departure at a speed of 11km/h. Passengers on an Antarctic cruise have gone on a hunger strike due to the ship’s engine failure, causing the expedition to be shortened. Operated by Swan Hellenic, the SH Diana set sail from Cape Town on 13 November for a 21-day journey to the southern region. Unfortunately, one of the ship’s electric motors experienced an unexpected issue, ending the €10,000 trip. The vessel is expected to reach Ushuaia, Argentina for repairs on Saturday. Approximately 170 passengers are onboard the SH Diana, the company’s largest ice-class expedition liner, traveling at a speed of 6 knots or 11km per hour. The original itinerary included stops at various Antarctic landmarks, but engine problems led to a change in plans. Passengers who paid up to €10,000 for the cruise are upset with Swan Hellenic for not offering full compensation. [...]
Winter Skiing in Europe 2024: Expert Snow Predictions
2024-10-19Unstable and warm weather conditions in recent years have caused a lack of snow on the slopes, impacting this winter’s ski season. Another French resort recently made the difficult decision to permanently close its lifts due to a shortage of snow, declining visitor numbers, and increasing debt. This struggle is not unique to French resorts, as high temperatures in February affected ski towns in Austria, Bosnia, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland, particularly those at lower elevations. Climate change is the main cause of Europe’s rising temperatures, exacerbated in 2024 by the El Niño phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean, which brought excessive heat. As we transition out of this climate system, La Niña is expected to bring a cooling effect. Looking for the best ski destinations in Europe this winter? Unfortunately, Grand Puy and Alpe du Grand Serre in France have already closed due to economic losses. For a guaranteed snow experience, consider heading to higher altitude resorts like Avoriaz, Tignes, Val d’Isère, and Val Thorens in France, opening in late November. For an earlier start, check out Finland’s Levi and Ruka resorts or Austria’s Kitzsteinhorn Glacier in Zell am See. Sölden in Austria will open in mid-November, Ischgl at the end of November, Diavolezza in Switzerland on 19 October, and Cervinia in Italy on 26 October. [...]

Palm House Reopens in Palm Beach: 17-Year Wait Ends
2024-09-29After being closed since 2007, a highly anticipated luxury hotel in Palm Beach, Florida, has finally reopened thanks to the efforts of L+R Iconic Luxury Hotels. The property, located just steps from the coastline, was purchased by the company in 2019 and underwent a three-year restoration to bring it back to its original glory. The goal was to create a place of “relaxed exclusivity and discretion,” reminiscent of a classic restored home. To maintain the building’s timeless character, key architectural features such as the signature coral facade, carved cypress arbors, and limestone arches were carefully preserved. [...]
